Chicago Board of Trade

This was a three screen run. The first screen - a negative that captured the sunlight behind the clouds printed first. I played with red-orange and yellow in this screen. Then came the over exposed positive (from which the above negative was made) to express the snow and clouds. Purple tint for the sky and blue tint for the snow were this screen's colors. Finally atop theses layers printed wet-on-wet, I printed the black screen.

This image I first saw on a cold day riding my bike to the American Indian Center while the snow still swirled in the air against a monotone cloud cover. A violent blizzard wind had toppled the night before an old tree growing a block off the Rosehill Cemetery entrance. It died in its winter slumber. The image stayed with me all day. On my way home, I stopped as the sun shone low on the horizon peaking through the retreating clouds. The stark bare branches rising against the winter scene with the Cemetery's flag flying in the distance completed the picture. I dismounted my bike, ungloved my hands and shot this tribute to this tree many years my senior. Then, I peddled off through the snowy streets to a warm home and dinner.

Screen printing in the hands of an artist is not just a technical skill - it is an art.
