Chicago River I

This is a four screen print. Screen order when printing wet on wet is important. The four screens in order of printing are blue, yellow-green, green-blue and black. "Wet on wet" means printing all the screens one after the other on top of the previous screens while previous layers are still wet. This means that ink from previous screen mixes with the later screens layers of ink and accumulates on the bottoms of the second, third and fourth screens. If one screen moves, then for 3-6 prints the image will have fuzzy edges where the accumulated ink on the bottoms of the other screens prints in different register from the screen that moved. Ha! This is why every time a screen is added the printing gets more touchy. Try it - you'll see.

I also had a lot of fun adding white and blue ink to the blue screen from little bits of card stock before pulling the blue ink. This produced clouds in the sky and glinting to the river water. It guarenteed each print would be unique. I do not apologize for making the Chicago River into a more fun environment than it may appear on a typical big-city-rush day with the pollution from traffic with careless public litter and wind blown garbage. We are permitted to dream forwards, backwards as well as in the present in our creative lives.

I beat the stiff registration issue with this design. When the screens moved a bit back and forth - points of white from the t-shirt jumped out in the trees like highlights within the yellow and green of the leaves abstracting the glistening leaves of a sharp summer's sun on foliage. This added another variation to the prints. Screen printing in the hands of an artist is not just a technical skill - it is an art.
