Walkin the Walk

"Walking the Walk" uses three screens, yellow, brown and blue. The yellow screen, printed first sets up the highlight tones. The brown screen, printed second, builds the middle tones. The Blue screen, printed last atop its complimentary colors, tends toward black to establish the shadows.

This image derived from a black and white photograph shot at an art fare held in front of the DuSable Museum . This African American museum hosts this annual event to showcase an expansive field of African and African American artists and crafts people from Chicago and beyond. This composition received its title from my wife Deborah.

As with most of my work, I printed my photo on 4"X5" Kodalith film at various exposures dodging and burning as needed to capture the details required to build my image. The 4X5's I selected for screens were then enlarged on a copy machine at Kinkos several times at the same session to preserve alignment and photo sensitized screens were exposed through the oil soaked paper copies. Copying images on acetate cost more but works better and eliminates the oil in the process. It's the artist's choice. Enjoy.

Screen printing in the hands of an artist is not just a technical skill - it is an art.
